I was out dog walking with Finn again yesterday, this time in the mountains of France’s Tarentaise region, and I stumbled across my first adder of the summer.

As ever this guileless creature skittered away as fast as it could, but not before I got the chance to admire it’s lovely markings. And I thought how for a snake there is nothing you can do to overcome the bad PR (I suppose you could hire Max Clifford..no, no, let’s not go there…).

Yet very few snakes, particularly an adder, would ever attack a human unless cornered, so why is most of humanity so antagonistic towards them? I blame the Bible myself – yet another example of Christianity revelling in intolerance as it lays into snakes from the first chapter.
